All may not be as bizarre as that initially seems; the Pikachu character has previously been seen working as a detective in a 2016 video game of the same name.
Although Pokémon movies have been made in the past, this is the first attempt at turning the franchise into a live action cinema experience. The voice and facial likeness of Ryan Reynolds in the main role should be a major positive for the film, with Justice Smith appearing as his human partner in the police force. Smith's character is the only person in the world who can understand what Pikachu is saying (think Brian and Stewie in 'Family Guy'), and the two must work together to solve a great mystery.
